What type of insurance do UberX drivers have?
Uber insurance – Uber posts on their website the information related to their insurance program
. It is a National program written through James River Insurance Company,
a company that specializes numerous specialty lines including harder-to-place risks.

FOR THE DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS:
The above graphic (lifted from Uber’s site
) shows coverage for the driver works over three periods:
Driver Offline – While not logged in to Uber’s app, the driver’s is not contracted by Uber. They must rely on their own insurance.
PERIOD 1:
Driver Online – Available – Uber provides the driver with $50,000/person, $100,000/Accident, Bodily Injury Liability and $25,000/Property Damage Liability.
PERIOD 2 & 3:
En Route or On Trip – $1,000,000 Liability – and – $1,000,000 Uninsured Motorist Combined Single Limit.
In addition, Uber provides Comperehensive & Collision – if – the driver carries those same overages on their own personal auto policy.
During this phase, in states where No-Fault Insurance is required by Taxis and Limos, that coverage part is provided as well.
Uber provides sample Certificates of Insurance
for every state in which they operate. Here’s a sample from California
. A sample from Pennsylvania
UBER’S CORPORATE INSURANCE PROGRAM:
To my knowledge, Uber does not post the insurance program that have in place corporately. One would not expect them to do so.
It would be safe to guess however, that Uber has many layers of liability coverage over and above what is extended to each driver (as shown above). It would not be uncommon for a company their size to have limits in excess of nine figures to protect them from potential lawsuits due to injury.
Good question, hope that helps.
